The Owner - Egmar Klemmer grew up in Southern Germany, in the foot hills of the Alps, as an outdoor enthusiast, mountain climber and windsurfer. Since most of his family lives in Kailua, he started spending summers here as a teenager and became a competitive windsurfer. He quickly discovered Hawaii and Oahu’s Kailua Beach as an ideal location to live and train. Since then he has continued to compete in windsurfing races as well as become and avid surfer, stand up paddler, kayaker, kite surfer and all around waterman. He can be found at the shop or in the water, nearly every day of the year; with the same passion and enthusiasm when he first came here in 1983. -See Staff Bios
History - Kailua Sailboards & Kayaks was established in 1982, in downtown Kailua, during the early days of windsurfing. Hawaii was exploding with the sport and Kailua quickly earned its reputation as the early windsport capital. After several years, we did the obvious thing and moved down by the beach. Over the years Kailua has also been discovered as one of the most popular kayaking and watersports destinations in the world and our shop has been there to provide the gear and the staff the whole way through. We now boast the largest fleet of rental kayaks in Hawaii, with tandem and single kayaks as well as faster sea kayak and surf kayak models. After more than 25 years of service, you can still find us here, just a block from Kailua Beach Park, handing out kayaks and windsurfing gear as well as our expert advice in the warm Kailua sun.
Kailua Sailboards & Kayaks: Beach Center Shop
Our shop is a full service Kailua Watersport's Center with all the gear and beach accessories for the water. We carry the biggest surf-brand t-shirts, UV-shirts and board shorts including Twin Island, Rip Curl, Xcel, Reef, Local Motion, Dakine, Split, Toes on the Noes and more. We also have a line of origional Kailua hats, stickers and t-shirts in men’s, women’s and children’s styles.
We are the distributor for Spectrum Kayaks in Hawaii and sell new and used, single and double sit-on-top kayaks.
We are the dealer for North Sails, Mistral Windsurfing, Chinook and Dakine for Oahu and we sell new and used sails, windsurf boards, harnesses and accessories.
We are the dealer for North Kite Boarding for Oahu and sell all models and sizes of North kites, boards, harnesses and accessories.
We are a dealer for NSP and Boardworks surfboards and Amundson Hawaii Stand Up Paddle Boards and sell new and used surfboards and SUPs.
Board shorts and UV Shirts
Our Facilities - we have free parking, showers, restrooms, dressing rooms and locker rentals. We also have large briefing maps of Kailua Bay, with video support as well as an up to date weather board to give you full knowledge of the area and conditions before heading out.
Eco Lounge - Kailua Sailboards & Kayak's boasts a one of a kind briefing room with visuals and multi media tools, used to educate and enhance the interaction between Kailua's natural and human ecology. The Eco Lounge is used to brief guided kayaking groups as well as being free and open to the public and community.
